Department of Science Education
The Department of Science Education started its activities in the 1998-1999 Academic Year at the Faculty of Education of Süleyman Demirel University in Burdur. With the establishment of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University in 2006, it continued its educational activities within the same faculty. As of the Fall Semester of 2004-2005, a Master's program in Science Education was opened under the Institute of Science, and then it was included in the newly established Institute of Educational Sciences as of the 2011-2012 Academic Year. As of the 2017-2018 Academic Year, a doctoral program has been opened within the same institute. Currently, undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs continue their academic activities in the Department.
In the Department of Science Education, education is given in Turkish on Science subjects. The Department of Science Education is a four-year program where courses are conducted in Field Education, Professional Knowledge, and General Culture areas updated within the framework of the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework. Student-centered learning and teaching activities that will support the professional development of students are implemented in the program. The program is constantly evaluated and improvement studies are carried out. Our department currently continues its academic activities with a total of 12 staff, including 5 professors, 3 associate professors, 3 doctorate faculty members, and 1 research assistant.
The Undergraduate Program of Science Education in the Department of Mathematics and Science Education at the Faculty of Education of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University aims to train teachers who have the knowledge, skills, and experience to provide education in the field. The aim of the program is to train Science teachers who can use contemporary education technologies effectively, display behaviors in accordance with personal and professional ethical values, be a good model for students, and adopt scientific thinking, by ensuring that teachers are equipped with special field competencies. Graduates of the Science Education undergraduate program have the opportunity to receive postgraduate education in addition to conducting Science courses in middle schools.
The Science Education program has a mission to train teachers who have pedagogical and professional knowledge, think creatively and problem-solving focused, can support students' Science thinking skills and conceptual understandings, and a vision to ensure the training of exemplary teachers who have the skills required by the age in the field of Science education, are ready for the innovations of the information society.
